Manchester Unitedā€™s six-year wait for major silverware is now over as the Old Trafford Landlords saw off Newcastle United 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

In running out winners at Wembley, Erik ten Hag secured his first silverware in English football with an inspiring triumph over the Eddie Howe-tutored side.

After an even, slightly untidy start where chances were at a premium, a Casemiro-inspired Red Devils blew the game wide open with two quickfire goals in just six first-half minutes.

The exceptional Casemiro grabbed the opener, nodding Luke Shaw’s free-kick past Loris Karius. And six minutes later, Marcus Rashford burst free of the Magpies’ defence and fired on goal, with an unfortunate deflection off Sven Botman taking the ball into the net.

However, United did not have it all their own way after the break as, buoyed by rampant traveling support, Newcastle dialed up the pressure. In truth though, there was never much danger of the Red Devils allowing their lead slip in clinching the first major silverware of the Erik ten Hag era.

With their last success coming way back in 2017, the Dutch Manager has delivered in his first season as boss at Old Trafford and the feeling is already that of more glory to aim at before the season ends.

One of the most decorated sides in world football, having claimed 13 Premier League titles under legendary former boss Sir Alex Ferguson, United had suffered a number of near misses since Jose Mourinho delivered Europa League glory back in 2017.

Current happenings indicate that Erik ten Hag is the man to have gotten them over a winning line once more and the victory sparked wild scenes of celebration at Wembley Stadium and on the red side of Manchester.

United, who also savoured League Cup success under Mourinho back in 2016-17, have now won that competition on six occasions. And having gotten back into the trophy-collecting habit, Ten Hag will be hoping that there are more successes to come in his first season at the helm.

Currently, they are in the hunt for four trophies this season, with one more now added to a well-stocked cabinet. A potential quadruple remains on the cards, with the Red Devils sitting third in the Premier League table, eight points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

Additionally, United have also made their way into the Europa League last-16 round as well as the FA Cup fifth round with high hopes of further progress in both competitions. – With Goal.com reports
