- ‘Blue Wave ‘ flips seats in Texas, Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio
- Democrats gain control of US Senate with historic wins in key battlegrounds
- Trump ready to accept results in a dire night for Republicans
After spending weeks pleading with Americans to pretend he was on the ballot, US President Donald Trump has been dealt a devastating blow to his authority in a night of crushing defeats in the midterm elections, which saw his Republican party stripped of control of the Senate and the House as his handpicked “Maga” candidates were swept away by a blue tsunami.
Ahead of the election, Trump had repeatedly urged voters to embrace the Republic candidates as his personal project. He may now rue that tactic as results from the field indicate that the American people took him at his word, and delivered a bloody nose of historic proportions, flinging his presidency into lame duck status.
However, he appeared to have changed his mind last night, declaring on social media: “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!”
As the night progressed, one shock followed the next. Top of the list was Texas, the state that has come to epitomise the iron fist of modern Republican rule and according to the Associated Press (AP), Democrats have now won control of the US Senate.
With historic wins in Texas, Iowa, Kansas and South Carolina, the party now has 51 seats, the magic number needed to win the upper chamber of Congress. The Blue wave is also poised to take control of the House as results continue pouring in.
