BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – The General Court Martial (GCM), sitting at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Makurdi on Tuesday sentenced Aircraftman (ACM), Bernard Kalu to death by hanging for shooting and killing his female colleague, late Aircraftwoman (ACW) Sholape Oladipupo.
In the judgement, President of the GCM, Group Captain Elisha Bindul, said Kalu was found guilty of murder, house breaking, impersonation, failure to perform military duty, loss of Service property and disobedience to standing orders.
The GCM verdict is however subject to confirmation by the Convening Authority.
However, the defence Counsel, said he was not satisfied with the verdict, stressing that if the Convening Authority fail to review the verdict, he would appeal to a higher court.
The GMC’s ruling brought to an end, months of trial of the case of shooting incident involving the two NAF personnel.
It would be recalled that ACM Kalu shot and killed ACW Oladipupo Sholape on March 12, 2017 at NAF Base, Makurdi.
A press statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya, said the successful conclusion of the GCM is a validation of NAF’s earlier assurance to the public that justice would be served to all concerned parties in the matter.
