For defrauding a customer to the tune N22.35 million, an employee of TAJ Bank Limited, Janet Theophilus Danjuma, has been sentenced to five years in a correctional centre without an option of fine by a court in Kano State.

The defendant was convicted and sentenced by Justice S. M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court sitting in Kano following her arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Kano Zonal Directorate of the anti-graft commission had arraigned Janet on 16th February 2026, on a one-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence.

According to the EFCC, Janet Danjuma, being a staff of TAJ Bank Limited, Nai’bawa Branch Kano, obtained N22,350,000 from one Wade Bamaiyi under the pretext that the money would be invested in CASA Program of the bank.

The Commission told the Court that the defendant abuse her position by converting the funds to personal use and thereby committed an offense contrary to Section 1(1)(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offenses Act 2006 and Punishable Under section 1(3) of the same Act.

A statement by the EFCC said Danjuma pleaded guilty to the one-count charge when it was read to her, adding that following her guilty plea, the prosecuting counsel, Sadiq Huseini, reviewed the facts of the case, detailing how the defendant deceived her victims by exploiting the name of a legitimate financial product to gain their trust.

The EFCC’s Counsel urged the court to convict the defendant accordingly as prescribed by law. Consequently, Justice Shuaibu found the defendant guilty and sentenced her to five years imprisonment without an option of fine.

The court was informed EFCC’s investigations revealed that Danjuma fraudulently induced the victim to invest in a non-existent scheme, falsely claiming the funds would be channeled into the TAJ Bank CASA programme. However, the Commission traced the entire sum to her personal bank account
