Naira Scarcity: APC NWC Meets Progressive Govs Sunday
BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – Hard pressed by the high-pitched discordant tunes coming from within, the Senator Abdullahi Adamu-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC has summoned State governors of the party to an emergency meeting in Abuja, the nation’s capital city.
Tagged “Notice of Meeting Of All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors With The National Chairman Of The Party”, the meeting, slated for 2 pm on Sunday, February 19, is coming barely a week before the presidential poll that holds on Saturday, February 25, 2023.
Insiders said though the meeting’s agenda has not been officially made public, it may be connected with current developments in the polity, especially the current scarcity of the Naira and its adverse effects on the party’s ongoing campaigns.
The meeting’s notice issued by the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka on Friday night, stated thus: “The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), His Excellency, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, invites State Governors of the Party to an emergency meeting to be held on Sunday, February 19, 2023, by 2 pm at the National Secretariat, Abuja.”
Sources close to the APC spokesman hinted that the NWC is particularly worried by the barrage of attacks on President Muhammadu Buhari by some State governors, especially Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna, Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, who are openly defying the Presidency with their criticisms and opposition to the Naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Additionally, one of the insiders reports that the NWC is desirous of taking a position aimed at reining in torrid comments against the President by the angry governors and party stakeholders in the public space with just a week to the presidential election.
It was gathered that with most stakeholders complaining about not being carried along by the President in the implementation of the controversial Naira swap policy, the NWC is desperately looking to promote cohesiveness and ensure unity of purpose among members and party structures in the ongoing campaigns.
