BY AHMED TUKUR, LAFIA – The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has threatened to revoke the contract for the renovation of a block of three classrooms at LGEA Primary School, Ningo, in Akwanga Local Government Area, over alleged use of substandard materials and poor execution of the project.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Abel Yakubu Bala, gave the warning on Friday, September 25, 2026 during an on-the-spot inspection of school projects in Akwanga and Kokona Local Government Areas.
Bala, who led other members of the committee on the inspection, expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of work at the Ningo school, saying the project appeared far from completion despite being recorded as completed.
He said; “Our records state that the project is completed, but our visit shows that it is only 60 to 70 per cent complete”.
The House committee chairman also faulted the quality of materials used by the contractor, particularly the doors, windows and ceiling.
Bala further said; “The materials used are highly substandard. The doors and windows are highly substandard. It looks like the ceiling is about to fall down.
“So, we frown at what we saw on the ground. To be sincere, we are not too happy, and if necessary adjustments are not made, we will order the revocation of the work immediately,” he said.
Bala directed the contractor to immediately remove the alleged substandard materials and replace them with materials that meet the required specifications.
The House committee chairman warned that the Assembly would not tolerate the execution of school projects below the approved standards, adding that the contractor could face sanctions if the necessary corrections were not made.
He further said that the Assembly could also direct the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to revoke the contract.
Following the action of the House committee, the Clerk of the House was directed to invite the contractor to appear before the committee on Monday, September 28, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the Assembly Complex.
“The contractor handling the renovation of a block of three classrooms with an office at LGEA Primary School, Ningo, Akwanga LGA, should appear before the committee on Monday, September 28, 2026, by 10 a.m. at the Assembly Complex,” the committee directed.
Bala urged contractors handling school projects across the state to adhere strictly to approved specifications and ensure that quality materials were used in the execution of their projects.
He assured that the committee would continue to monitor school projects to ensure that contractors delivered quality work in line with the terms of their contracts.
The lawmaker commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for his commitment to the development of the education sector in the state, saying; “I want to commend His Excellency, Engr. A. A. Sule, for his passion and zeal for the development of education”.
