BY AHMED TUKUR, LAFIA – The Nasarawa State Government is set to commence the construction and reconstruction of rural roads across the state as part of measures to open up rural communities and stimulate economic activities.
This as the government is working on a supplementary budget to be presented to the State House of Assembly to accommodate the planned projects.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Affairs, Peter Ahemba, announced these while briefing journalists in Lafia.
Ahemba said the rural road projects would commence in selected communities, with the intervention expected to cover areas from the western part of the state to the northern zone.
He said the initiative was aimed at boosting economic activities at the grassroots by improving access between rural communities and major economic centres.
According to him, better road networks would facilitate the movement of farm produce, goods and services, while creating opportunities for wealth generation among residents.
Ahemba further said that the government would install solar-powered street lights in selected rural communities as part of its rural electrification programme, adding that the provision of the street lights would also improve security and enhance economic activities in the beneficiary communities.
The governor’s aide also said that the Nasarawa Urban Development Agency and the Bureau for Rural Development had been directed to immediately commence the inspection of defective roads across the state.
Ahemba said the inspection would enable the government to identify roads requiring urgent construction or reconstruction and ensure that the projects were captured in the supplementary budget.
He assured residents that the government remained committed to improving rural infrastructure and creating a conducive environment for economic growth across the state.
