BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – Ahead of Tuesday inauguration of the National Assembly, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Monday held a crucial meeting with elected governors, senators and some members of the House of Representatives on its platform.
The meeting, also attended by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, took place behind closed door in Abuja.
Forefront gathered that the session was convened to fine tune strategies for the election of presiding officers of the 9th National Assembly with a view to avoid the pitfalls of the 2015 episode that ushered in Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon Yakubu Dogara as the Senate President and Speaker, Federal House of Representatives respectively.
The meeting, presided over by the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is expected to come up with come up with the final lists of all approved candidates for the other offices in the National Assembly.
Forefront News learnt that while the meeting is comfortable with the mobilization and support being enjoyed by Senator Ahmed Lawan, it is however disturbed about the unfavourable reports being gathered about Hon Femi Gbajagbiamila for the position of Speaker.
It was gathered that some elected members of the House pointedly told the meeting that owing to some issues surrounding Gbajabiamila’s candidacy, it is proving difficult to push the party’s position through as majority of members are not too dispose to his candidature in addition to his lack of blending with his colleagues.
Other positions the party drew a list include that of the Senate Leader; Deputy Senate Leader; House Leader; Deputy House Leader; and Chief Whip for both chambers.
It was also gathered that the meeting endorsed the candidature of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege for the office of Deputy President of the Senate and Hon Idris Wase as Deputy Speaker of the House.
