The League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by former governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has called on the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio to step down in the interest of fairness.

The group said that after taking a critical look at the controversy involving the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, it was only proper that Akpabio should not be a judge in his own case.

These were contained in a statement by Dr Ladan Salihu, spokesperson of the LND, saying that Akpabio’s resignation would help restore public confidence and protect the integrity of the Senate.

The statement said; “To uphold the credibility of the Senate, LND demands that Akpabio step down as Senate President to allow for an unhindered investigation of the allegations.

“As the saying goes, ‘Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion. The situation has gone beyond a personal dispute and now threatens the credibility and effectiveness of the Senate,” it said.

LND also called for an independent and transparent investigation into the allegations, suggesting that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) or a special parliamentary ethics committee should lead the probe.
