The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called for the urgent need for government agencies, ministries, banks and the media to work together and promote understanding on how integrated data systems could improve public services.

This was as the Commission charged public institutions and other stakeholders to use information from Bank Verification Number (BVN) and Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) registration responsibly to support national development and improve citizens’ welfare.

The Commission’s Senior Manager, Regulatory Services, Mrs. Yetunde Adeyemo, who stated these recently in Lagos, noted that Nigeria had gathered large amounts of personal information through banking, telecommunications and other government programmes.

Adeyemo said that poor coordination among databases had reduced its usefulness, stressing that data collection would have limited impact without proper systems to help relevant institutions access and apply the information efficiently.

In the words of Adeyemo; “Stakeholders must take responsibility for ensuring that existing information produces practical benefits.

“Let’s start with being accountable, holding ourselves responsible, and using what we have to get the results we need,” she said.
