  • Says expectations were on someone from Lagos or Osun

Human rights activist and legal practitioner, Barrister Deji Adeyanju, says President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is a reflection of his knack for competence.

According to Adeyanju, the appointment was a pleasant surprise, because he had initially expected the President to choose someone from his immediate circle in Lagos or Osun State.

He said in a statement on Thursday, that, “I wish to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for nominating Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“This appointment reflects the President’s recognition of competence”.

Describing Amupitan as a man of scholarship and integrity, Adeyanju said, “Professor Amupitan’s record of scholarship and service makes him a deserving choice to lead the Commission at this time in our democracy.

“I must admit that I had expected the President to appoint someone from his immediate circle or from Osun State, but this decision comes as a pleasant surprise”.

He further noted that Prof Amupitan’s appointment demonstrates inclusiveness, especially being the first indigene from Kogi State’s minority Ijumu community to head the electoral body.

President Tinubu had on Thursday, October 9, 2025, announced the nomination of Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Professor of Law, as the new INEC Chairman during the National Council of State meeting

The President cited the Law Professor’s integrity, apolitical stance, and proven record of service as key factors in reaching this important decision.
