BY COBHAM NSA, ABUJA – Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola will represent President Muhammadu Buhari at Saturday’s Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Zambia in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.
According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Fashola is expected in the Akwa Ibom State capital on Saturday morning.
A statement by NFF’s spokesperson, Ademola Olajire, said on Friday that Fashola, who is the former governor of Lagos State, will be the Super Eagles’ Cheerleader as they battle Chipolopolo of Zambia for the sole ticket in Group B Africa’s qualifying series.
Fashola is a known football enthusiast having frequently hosted the grand finale of the Federation Cup (now AITEO Cup) competition during his eight years tenure as Lagos State Chief Executive.
The Federation’s image maker said aside from Mr President’s representative, other top government officials expected at the match venue include President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki; and Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung.
Olajire further stated that; “The Chairmen of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Sports, Senator Obinna Ogba and Representative Goni Bukar Lawan will also be guests at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.”
“The host, Gov. Udom Emmanuel and members of the Akwa Ibom Cabinet, NOC President Habu Gumel and Members of the NFF Executive Committee and Management will also be present,’’ he said.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles currently sit three points ahead of second-placed Chipolopolo going into Saturday’s match and require the minimum three points against the Zambians to join 10 other nations that have already qualified for the 32-team football showpiece slated for Russia next year.
