NLC President, Wabba Savours 2nd Term Victory
- PMB congratulates Ayuba, Labour leaders
BY VICTOR BUORO, ABUJA – President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Ayuba Wabba, has pledged that his second term will be focused on improved welfare and protection of the interest and rights of Nigerian workers.
This is as President Muhammadu Buhari congratulated Mr Wabba on his re-election as the NLC President.
Wabba was returned unopposed as the NLC President following a unanimous vote by the Congress 12th Delegates Conference held in Abuja
In his acceptance speech, Mr Wabba pledged that under his leadership, the Labour movement would double efforts at ensuring the rights and interests of workers are adequately protected, stressing that the board would always respect the will of members and consolidate on its achievements in the last four years.
According to him, “We will continue to conform to the tradition of the union and speak the truth to those in power. The daily challenges of workers at work place will be confronted.
“We have been able to work assiduously in the past four years and we will move forward to build workers poser. I assure our members of our commitment and dedication to the resolutions of the conference.”
He urged the political class to imitate the rancour-free election of the NLC, adding that it was important to address the global imbalance where more people live below poverty line in spite of the growing global wealth.
Among officers returned for another tenure are first deputy president, Amaechi Asuguni; second deputy president, Muhammed Idris; and third deputy president, Najim Yasim.
Others include: National Treasurer, Ibrahim Khalil; First Vice president, Abdulrafiu Adeniji; Second Vice president, Peter Adeyemi; Third Vice president, Lawrence Amaechi; Fourth Vice president, Oyelekan Lateef, Fifth Vice president, Mercy Okezie and National Trustee, Adewale Adeyanju.
Also elected are financial secretary, Mustapha Adamu; first internal auditor, Simon Ankavar; second internal auditor, Benjamin Anthony; third internal auditor, Olatunji Babatunde; first ex-officio member, Funmilayo Issa; and second ex-officio member, Comfort Okoh.
In felicitating with Mr Wabba over his victory, President Buhari, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja, also congratulated other members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) for their election and re-election.
President Buhari assured that his administration looks forward to a close working relationship with Mr Ayuba, the NLC Central Working Committee (CWC) and the Congress’ National Executive Council to fulfill the extraordinary promise of cordial partnership between government and Labour.
The President wished the new executive that will lead the Labour movement from 2019 to 2023 a successful tenure.
