No Electronic Results’ Transmission – INEC Boss Insists
- As Buhari’s counsel plays video in court
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmoud Yakubu has offered reasons for its inability to transmit electronically results of last general elections in the country.
Yakubu said contrary to claims by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate in the February 23 polls, Atiku Abubakar, the commission could not transmit results electronically due to inadequate communication facilities; network coverage in the country and the challenge of cyber-security.
Alhaji Atiku and the opposition PDP are challenging the presidential election outcome before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), claiming victory going by some results they acquired from a contentious INEC server where results of the polls were supposedly transmitted.
When proceedings resumed Tuesday morning at the Tribunal, Counsel to President Muhammadu Buhari, Alex Izinyon (SAN), played a video, where INEC Chairman explained that the electoral umpire could not transmit results electronically because of obvious communication challenges
The senior lawyer also tendered a Digital Video Disc (DVD) containing the interview Prof Yakubu granted to a private television station, where he gave details relating to the challenges of electronic transmission of the elections’ results.
The Tribunal thereafter admitted the DVD as Exhibit: P85, while the certificate of compliance, tendered with it, was admitted as Exhbit: P86.
