BY COBHAM NSA – Upscaling the Federal Government’s focus on treating computing power as its new oil, the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) is pivoting toward digital infrastructure and technology ventures to power the nation’s economic future.
Importantly, the Authority said with computing power strategically vital to the nation’s economic future as oil or minerals, reliable data storage, cloud capacity, and secure digital networks are now the foundation of national competitiveness.
In a new policy statement, NSIA also noted that as Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to reshape global industry, countries without robust tech infrastructure risk being left behind permanently in the digital age.
According to NSIA, the centerpiece of these technology ventures, designed to anchor Nigeria’s digital age growth, is the KASI Hyperscale Data Centre, a domestically built facility that offers cloud computing, data storage, and high-performance GPU processing to sectors such as banking, telecommunications, healthcare, education, and government.
The Authority explained that the facility aims to plug massive financial drain by slashing the foreign exchange Nigerian banks, government agencies, and e-commerce platforms spend hosting data abroad, adding that at full build-out, the 100-megawatt KASI campus will rank among Africa’s largest AI-ready data centers.
With the robust push by NSIA Managing Director and CEO, Aminu Umar-Sadiq, for digital infrastructure to become a core pillar of the authority’s investment approach, the statement said the project is being pursued alongside more traditional priorities like transportation and power.
The statement said: “Beyond KASI, NSIA pointed to several other technology-focused initiatives: the NSIA Prize for Innovation, which provides mentorship and capacity-building support to early-stage Nigerian entrepreneurs; a $50 million impact investment fund launched with Japan’s International Cooperation Agency to back tech-driven businesses tackling social and economic challenges; and exposure through its Future Generations Fund to venture capital and private equity managers investing in high-growth technology firms, including companies in broadband, cyber-security, and enterprise software.
“The authority framed the initiatives as complementary, with venture and private equity investments feeding market knowledge back into large infrastructure projects like KASI, while KASI in turn provides the computing backbone for the broader digital economy the fund is trying to cultivate.”
Further explaining that the joint initiative aims to fuel Nigeria’s tech economy by launching high-value engineering, software, and cyber-security jobs while drawing vital foreign investment into local data infrastructure, the statement said by lowering the entry barriers for homegrown startups and small businesses, the NSIA-led effort is positioned to slash their scaling costs and accelerate digital innovation across the country.
It also stated that, “The age of artificial intelligence is not coming; it is here”, stressing that NSIA’s goal is for Nigeria to serve as “a builder, a host, and a leader in the AI era rather than a bystander.”
Hammering on the need for Nigeria to develop the domestic infrastructure required to participate meaningfully in the global digital economy, NSIA said its objective focuses on creating an ecosystem in which businesses can scale up, AI capabilities are developed and deployed locally, while institutional capital deepens and Nigerian technology companies positioned to compete favourably in global markets.
It stated that the initiative backs Nigeria’s digital transition with sovereign capital, targeting both physical infrastructure and the broader investment ecosystem, stressing that while the KASI project delivers the critical hardware, NSIA’s fund investments bankroll the tech-driven businesses and entrepreneurs poised to scale it.
