The 2025 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, officially kicked off on Friday, July 18. 2025, with a congregational prayer held at the NASFAT Mosque in Utako district of Abuja.
In his sermon, the Acting Zonal Missionary Imam of NASFAT FCT, Malam Marouf Farouji, noted that when people are poorly informed, it fosters corruption in governance and society, adding however, that awareness of consequences encourages ethical behaviour
Farouji therefore tasked the leadership of the NUJ to remain steadfast in their dedication to serving humanity and upholding the principles of journalism.
He said; “First, let us thank Almighty Allah for the gift of life, for being human, and for being Muslim. The Holy Qur’an covers all aspects of life, including journalism, communication, and information”.
The cleric praised journalists across all media platforms—print, audio, visual, and multimedia—for the crucial role they play in shaping society and keeping the public informed.
Farouji further said; “Journalism is here to stay. It significantly contributes to societal transformation and enlightenment, regardless of religion—Muslim or Christian.
“The information journalists provide helps individuals fulfill their civic and spiritual duties. May Allah continue to support them,” he noted.
In his remarks, the Vice Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Yahaya Ndambabo, who represented the Council at the event, said starting the week with prayer reflects Nigeria’s religious values.
According to him; “Nigeria is a religious country, and journalists are no exception. As we launch this year’s Press Week, it is fitting to begin with an Islamic prayer here at NASFAT Mosque”.
Ndambabo also said that a Christian service is scheduled for Sunday, July 20, 2025, to demonstrate the union’s commitment to inclusivity and seeking divine guidance.
“As we dedicate this week to God, we are also pushing for better welfare for journalists in the FCT, including improved housing and enhanced protection.
“These are among the key focuses of our activities this week.
Other events planned include a public lecture and the revival of press clubs in secondary schools across the FCT,” he said.
Ndambabo called for professionalism and urged journalists to uphold ethical standards as well as combat fake news, saying; “The fight against misinformation starts with us”.
The Islamic opening prayer drew journalists from Abuja and beyond, thereby setting a solemn and focused tone for the weeklong activities.
