NUJ Tasks INEC On Credible, Acceptable Elections
- Urges Nigerians to elect credible leaders
BY EDMOND ODOK – Ahead of this year’s general elections, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the conduct of a “credible, free, fair and acceptable” polls for Nigerians.
Accordingly, the Union said the electoral umpire must not bow to distractions but work hard to meet the citizens’ expectations and yearnings for a “smooth, credible, free and fair elections” that will build a better Nigeria of our dreams.
Rising from its Special Delegates Conference held in Kano State, the NUJ urged the Commission to fulfill its mandate as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.
This is as the Conference also applauded the deployment of technology in the electoral process as backed by the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, with the aim of enhancing the electoral system and building the confidence of the people in the conduct of elections in the country.
On the attitude and behaviour of politicians as the election approaches, the Union expressed concern that some of them are overheating of the polity through all forms of verbal attacks and deployment of thugs in electioneering.
It therefore counseled the political class, particularly the presidential candidates of the leading political parties, to abide by the rules and do away with thuggery before, during and after the general elections
Importantly too, the NUJ charged Nigerians to take advantage of this year’s process to elect credible leaders who will successfully steer the ship of State in the next four years.
