NYSC Disowns Enugu Gov-elect’s Discharge Certificate

Amid allegations of sharp practice against the Governor-elect of Enugu State, Mr Peter Mbah, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yusha’u Dogara Ahmed, has distanced the Scheme from the Discharge Certificate being flaunted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the March 18, governorship election in the State.

This is against the backdrop of controversies surrounding the authenticity or otherwise of the said NYSC Discharge Certificate that Mbah presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as part of his documents to contest the gubernatorial poll.

Brigadier General Ahmed, who was a guest on Arise News Channel’s programme, the ‘Morning Show’ on Friday, pointedly said the certificate in Mbah’s possession was not issued by NYSC, adding; “You can’t go and collect a certificate on the street, you can’t go and collect a certificate from a hotel.

“The governor-elect is a lawyer. I am not a lawyer but I know as the DG of NYSC, I’m fully aware of this case. He came to me, I was frank to him and I told him this certificate is not from us,” Brig-Gen Ahmed stated.

However, informed that the Governor-elect has sued the NYSC and its Director of Certification over the matter, the NYSC boss retorted; “Do you sue somebody on pages of newspapers?”, adding; “As far as I am concerned, the NYSC has not been sued. I’ve not received any court order or anything.”

Probed further on the issue, General Dogara Ahmed expressed reluctance to offer additional information, saying; “I don’t want to talk much about this.”

On current arguments for the monthly allowance of Corps members to be reviewed upwards, General Ahmed urged them to jettison the agitation for now, insisting that instead of clamouring for an increment, participants of the Scheme should focus more on “what to do in service and outside service” in order to help themselves more and become productive members of society.
