Sen Ajimobi…Deputy Nat Chair (South)

BY VICTOR BUORO, ABUJA – National Chairman of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, says protests from Ekiti State chapter of the ruling party is not a strong reason to stop former Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi’s emergence as the new National Deputy Chairman (South).

He explained that the decision was based on majority of states in the South-West settling for Ajimobi as their chosen candidate for the position.

Comrade Oshiomhole said though the party recognized the right of Ekiti chapter to protest, being just one voice among the six states, makes it difficult to stop the former governor.

The APC National Chairman stated this in a chat with State House correspondents on Friday after introducing Ajimobi to President Muhammadu Buhari as the South-West choice to replace the Minister of Trade and Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, in the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party as National Deputy Chairman (South).

Offering insight on Ajimobi’s appointment to fill the vacant seat despite opposition from party chapter in Ekiti State that produced the immediate past occupant of the office, Comrade Oshiomhole, the APC was only respecting the majority decision of states in the South-West that settled for the choice.

According to him, “We have six states in the South-West where the seat was zoned. Ekiti is the only one opposing it. As we always say, majority had their way and the minority had their say. That’s all.”

On his mission to the Presidential Villa, Oshiomhole said it was to formally introduce Senator Ajimobi as the new National Deputy Chairman (South) to the President, adding that Buhari was “excited” to receive him as an individual with the wealth of experience and capacity to contribute in growing and moving the APC forward.

Hear him, “I came to present or reintroduce Senator Ajimobi, whom the South-West nominated into the position of Deputy National Chairman, to Mr President. He has filled the vacancy created when Mr President appointed Adebayo as a minister.

“The President was excited and delighted to see him as one who will bring his wealth of experience to bear on the party.”.

Comrade Oshiomhole also used the occasion to applaud the President on some measures already taken by his administration to address the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on Nigerians.

Citing the pump price reduction for petrol from N145 to N125 and the travel restriction on 15 high-risk countries among measures to be applauded, the APC National Chairman said; “I commend the President for the drop in price and we expect people to pass it down to the cost of transportation.”
