The coalition of Election Observer Groups that participated in monitoring the concluded Saturday Local Government election in Osun State has condemned in strong terms the attempt by the Nigeria Police Force to disrupt the exercise.
The groups however commended the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSICE) for its steadfastness and determination to carry out the election in spite of the brazen attempt by the police to thwart the exercise.
The election Observers also applauded the people of the state for their peaceful conduct during the local government elections held on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
The groups at a press conference in Osogbo on Sunday, February 23, 2025, particularly commended the electorate for their resilience and commitment to democratic principles, in spite of the reported cases of deliberate provocation and intimidation by some political actors and security agencies.
Chairman of the Election Observers coalition group, Mr Declan Ihekaire, specifically expressed concern over the conduct of the Nigeria Police Force, who were alleged to have issued threats and outrightly dissuaded some voters from exercising their franchise.
Ihekaire equally condemned the arbitrary arrest of some officials of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), and commended the officials of the Osun State Electoral body for their dedication and professionalism in ensuring a smooth conduct of the election.
The Observers group however acknowledged some logistical challenges which they attributed to the activities of the Nigeria Police in their attempt to disrupt the election.
The Election Observers commended the Osun State Government for conducting the election, thereby demonstrated its commitment to deepening democracy.
The Observers therefore challenged other states to conduct their local government elections without delay as well as ensure the active participation of the people at all levels of governance.
The groups while congratulating the winners of the elections, urged those not satisfied with the process to seek redress through legitimate means and stressed the need for enduring peace in the State.
The election observers reaffirmed their commitment to free, fair, and credible elections, vowing to continue monitoring and advocating for democratic values that strengthen the electoral process and ensure good governance.
