Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Council of State for granting state pardon to former Governors of Plateau and Taraba States, Senator Joshua Dariye and Reverend Jolly Nyame respectively.

Both former governors were serving jail terms in Kuje Correctional Centre located in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following their convictions over financial malfeasance while serving as Chief Executives of their states between 1999 and 2007.

Appearing on an Arise Television programme a fortnight ago, Governor Ortom had pleaded with the Federal Government to review the cases of Dariye and Nyame with a view to granting them a state pardon.

On Thursday, April 14, 2022, the National Council of States, meeting at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa with President Buhari presiding, considered and approved the state pardon for Dariye, Nyame and others.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nathaniel Ikyur, the Benue Governor lauded the President and the National Council of States for the kind gesture, noting that “some useful lessons must have been learnt from the incident.”

Governor Ortom also thanked friends, families and political associates of both leaders who stood by them during the period of their incarceration, noting that the duo would now reunite with their families and have happy lives once again.
