BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – For his consistency in always telling truth to power at great personal risk, the Atiku-Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation says Nigerians should be grateful to the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah.

According to the country’s main opposition party, the highly respected Clergy has remained a strong voice for the ordinary Nigerians who have been passing through untold hardship and suffering due to the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s maladministration since taking over the country’s leadership almost eight years now.

In his Christmas Day message titled; “Let us turn a new leaf”, Bishop Kukah said Nigerians were in pain on account of President Muhammadu Buhari’s failure to fulfil his campaign promises of fixing the country.

Specifically, the Catholic Priest said; “In my Christmas message last year, I pointed out the fact that you had breached the Constitution by your failure to honour and adhere to the federal character provisions of our Constitution. The evidence is all before us all.’’

And reacting to the Bishop’s message, the PDP Campaign Organisation said it was clearly a verdict of woeful performance by the APC since coming to power in 2015, noting that; “Tinubu and his allies want to make President Muhammadu Buhari the fall guy of the tragic rule of the dysfunctional APC regime, which has left Nigeria and Nigerians in the worst kind of misery ever experienced.

“Bishop Kukah’s message is a validation of what most right-thinking Nigerians know for a fact that the APC has failed. What remains is for us as a nation not to repeat the mistakes we made in 2015 and 2019 to vote for another APC regime”, a spokesperson for the Campaign Organisation, Kola Ologbondiyan, said.

Ologbondiyan further said it is unfortunate that the apologists of APC and its presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, would want Nigerians to focus on outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari and overlook their complicity in his administration’s monumental failures

He said; “The fact remains that the policies and programmes, which Buhari implemented, belong to the APC. Just like Tinubu is going about celebrating the work of his successors whom he helped to power, he cannot dissociate himself and the experimental contraption called the APC from Buhari’s actions.

“The fact that he and his party are ashamed to use whatever this regime claims to have achieved as campaign tools for the election, is a testimony to the fact that they failed Nigerians in every material sense.

“We insist that if in the unlikely event that Tinubu gets the opportunity, the current suffering of Nigerians will be child’s play. The last eight years showed that the APC has nothing to offer Nigerians but misery, unrestrained corruption, nepotism, insecurity and shameless propaganda in an attempt to cover up.

“If Tinubu had something to offer, he would have shared it with Buhari for him to succeed except if he is telling Nigerians that he deliberately set up Buhari, whom he literarily brought to power to fail so that he would reference the failure to seek political power for himself.”

Insisting that Nigerians are now fully aware that life was better under the PDP administration, the Campaign spokesperson further said; “For us to rebuild our nation, therefore, we must as a matter of patriotic duty bring back the good times by voting for the Atiku-Okowa ticket and return the PDP to power come 2023.

“We cannot afford to bring in another person for experimental purposes, you can’t bring in a person and a party we know cannot have 10 per cent in the parliament, it would be a disaster. We can’t survive another four years under the APC because returning the APC to power will be reinforcing failure.”

Ologbondiyan, who was the immediate past National Publicity Secretary of the PDP said; “Our nation deserves better and the PDP is the party that is most prepared to undertake this task.”

In his Christmas message delivered at St. Mary Catholic Church, Sokoto, Bishop Kukah said President Buhari would be exiting from power with the nepotism tag as a major sore point that characterized his administration

For the Catholic Bishop, it is sad that despite the President’s lofty promises, he is leaving the country far more vulnerable than when he took over the mantle of leadership, lamenting that “the corruption we thought would be fought has become a leviathan and sadly, a consequence of a government marked by nepotism.”
