Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, emerged as the sole presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election.
The party confirmed Obi’s candidacy shortly after he was screened by a 17-member screening committee chaired by the former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Sam Egwu.
The NDC said Obi was the only aspirant that purchased the presidential nomination form and expression of interest forms before the close of sales on May 19.
The NDC however extended the date for the sales of forms for other positions until May 26.
Obi, who arrived the NDC’s headquarters in Abuja at about 6:45 p.m., and accompanied by Senator Victor Umeh, submitted his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms through an aide.
The 17-member committee, inaugurated the same day, is also expected to screen aspirants for the governorship, senatorial, and House of Representatives positions.
Speaking at the inauguration, the National Secretary of NDC, Mr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu Esq., said Senator Egwu will serve as chairman while the NDC National Legal Adviser, Mr. Reuben Egwuaba will serve as Secretary of the 17-member panel.
