Pirates Strike, Abduct Five People In Rivers’ Waterway
BY ONYEKACHUKWU IBEZIM – Suspected Pirates struck early Tuesday morning abducting about five persons along the Bonny waterways in Rivers State.
According to an eyewitness account, the victims include two women as the passengers were traveling in a speedboat across the area that has remained notorious for kidnapping activities in the State.
Coming barely two weeks after five members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) were abducted along the Kula-Abonnema waterway, the latest incident reportedly took place near the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOC) in the Onne axis of the state.
Sources said the victims were seized and whisked away by their attackers between 7.30 and 8 am on Tuesday, August 10, 2021
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the sources hinted that though the incident was immediately reported to the marine police, there has been no information yet about the whereabouts of the kidnapped persons.
The source explained that of interest is the fact that the five passengers were picked out of the travelling party and ferried away while the others were allowed to continue their journey to Port- Harcourt.
In his reaction when contacted, Rivers Police spokesperson, Nnamdi Omoni, said the report of the abduction was not yet on his table but assured that the officer-in-charge of Marine Police would be contacted for a proper briefing on the said incident.
