As expected, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in last Saturday’s Plateau State Local Government Councils poll, winning all the chairmanship and councillorship seats in the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
Chairman, Plateau Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), Mr Fabian Ntung, who announced the result on Sunday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, said APC won the entire 325 councillorship seats in the 17 LGAs.
Ntung said the Commission was satisfied with the peaceful manner the election held and praised the electorate who ensured a free and peaceful conduct of the exercise.
The electoral umpire had excluded the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the poll, following its internal crises, a decision which the party challenged but lost at both the High Court and Appeal Court.
In barring the PDP from participating in the elections, PLASIEC cited a judgment secured by some members of the party against its leadership in the state.
Speaking on Saturday’s local councils’ polls, Plateau PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr John Akans, described the exercise as “appointments and rape of democracy”, noting that what PLASIEC did was not elections but a mere selection and appointment of APC members into elective offices.
The PDP spokesman said the party’s next line of action would be unveiled on Monday, October 11, 2021, after an emergency Stakeholders’ caucus meeting.
Reacting to his party’s victory at the poll, APC’s State Secretary, Mr Sati Bashir, admitted that it was not all smooth sail as the Party battled internal and other challenges throughout the process of conducting the election.
However, Basir expressed happiness that the process ended smoothly and his party emerged victorious, adding; “We are through with the elections and we are moving to the next level.
“The most important thing is that there hasn’t been any problem anywhere. There was no threat to peace in any part of the state and we are happy that all went well,’’ he said. – With NAN reports
