BY SEGUN ADEBAYO, ABUJA – The police on Wednesday arrested suspended Senator Ovie Omo-Agege over the stealing of a mace in the Senate, just as the upper chamber of the National Assembly directed the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotun Idris and Director General of the State Security Services (SSS), Mr Lawal Daura, to retrieve the stolen mace.
The Mace was carted away by hoodlums suspected to have links with suspended All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Ovie Omo-Agege of Delta State
According to the Senate spokesman, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, “The Senate has mandated the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Idris Kpotun Ibrahim and Director General of the State Security Services (SSS), Mallam Lawan Daura, to retrieve the mace stolen by the hoodlums within 24 hours.”
Describing the invasion of the Senate by the thugs led by suspended Omo-Agege as an act of treason, the statement declared, “Today, some armed hoodlums led by suspended Senator, Ovie Omo-Agege, walked into the Senate plenary and seized the symbol of authority of the Upper Legislative Chamber, the mace.
“This action is an act of treason, as it is an attempt to overthrow a branch of the Federal Government of Nigeria by force, and it must be treated as such. All security agencies must stand on the side of due process and immediately mobilise their personnel to retrieve the mace and apprehend the mastermind and the perpetrators of this act.
“This action is also an affront on the legislature, and the leadership of the House has come to express their support against this action.
The Senate is now in an Executive session. An updated statement will be released immediately after the closed door session.
The Senate plenary had on Wednesday been disrupted after suspected thugs invaded the chamber and made away with the mace. The incident took place few seconds after suspended senator Omo-Agege entered the chamber.
No fewer than 10 suspected thugs, according to sources, who accompanied the suspended lawmaker, forced their entrance into the chamber. A moment later, the thugs ran out of the chamber with the mace causing pandemonium in the Senate.
They later left the premises of the National Assembly with the mace in a black SUV. Meanwhile, the police have arrested Senator Omo-Agege over the matter.
