Police, Family Move To Unravel Suicide By Boy, 17 In Bauchi
BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – The Bauchi State Police Command and family members of a 17-year-old boy, Betwom Bitrus are searching for answers after the teenager committed suicide by hanging himself.
Confirming the death of Betwon, who was a resident of Bombar in Bogoro Local Government Area (LGA) of Bauchi State, the Command Public Relations Officer (PRO), Superintendent of Police (SP) Ahmed Wakili said the unfortunate incident took place on Tuesday evening.
The Police told newsmen that the late Betwom, had in the company of his friends, gone to the Bombar River to bathe on Tuesday evening when the incident occurred.
According to the PPRO; “I can confirm to you that at about 12 pm today (Wednesday) the Command received a report from a good Samaritan about a suicide committed by one young man called Master Betwom Bitrus aged 17, a resident of Bombar here in Bogoro town.
“Investigation revealed that he was with his friends yesterday (Tuesday), late evening. Nobody is aware of why he hanged himself. His lifeless body was found on the tree with sponges and feaces all over his body where he hung himself. He was taken to the General Hospital where doctors confirmed him dead.”
The PPRO further stated that investigations are still ongoing to unravel the reason behind the unfortunate incident saying, “I regret the death of late Betwom Bitrus and I grieve with the family of the victim.”
This is as the Command urged parents and guardians to always know the whereabouts of their children and wards to ensure that they are safe at all times.
Speaking on the incident, a resident of Bombar, Mr Daniel Haruna told newsmen: “Yes, I want to tell you that a young man committed suicide and we don’t know why. We are in a sad mood right now. He was last seen with friends yesterday (Wednesday) evening. As I am talking to you, his burial has commenced.”
Meanwhile, a statement by Gomna James, Information Officer of Bogoro LGA said efforts are on to get vital information from the friends whom the late Betwon was last seen with in order to ascertain what could have led to the unfortunate incident.
