The protest later turned chaotic as the men of the Nigeria Police fired teargas at the protesters who gathered at the Utako market area to demonstrate against the economic hardships, hunger, rising cost of food items, spiral fuel prices, and high inflation.
The #FearlessInOctober protest, organized by members of the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on the aegis of #EndBadGovernance movement, was organize to coincide with Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day anniversary.
The protesters sang different songs and carried different banners with inscription stating; “We are hungry”, “Enough is Enough” “our purchasing power have been wiped out”, We Can’t Pay Prohibitive Electricity Cost” among others, also demanded an end to poverty and poor governance.
While they marched along the street in front of the popular Utako Market, they were met with force by police operatives who on arrival instantly shot teargas and dispersed them.
The protest which also took place in Lagos, did not record the much traction as the August protests.
As a precaution, the military was also deployed to strategic locations along the Kubwa-Zuba expressway with their vans positioned at different intersection of the road to curtail possible protest.
The protest was planned by the organisers to draw the attention of the federal government to what they described as the hardship occasioned the removal of subsidy from petrol which escalated the cost of PMS that equally triggered uncontrollable rising cost of food items, inflation on goods and services and the high cost of electricity tariffs that have drastically and negatively affected the livelihood of a majority of Nigerians that hardly can afford one square meal per day.
