Senator Shehu Buba Umar representing Bauchi South senatorial district in the National Assembly, on Sunday, May 24, 2026 announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) citing the absence of internal democracy, lack of fairness, and marginalization of genuine party members.

Senator Umar also announced his joining the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) which he described as a political platform built on the principles of justice, transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and people-oriented leadership, with strong commitment to the democratic values enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Umar stressed that Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive where political parties allow fairness, equal opportunity, internal democracy, and active participation of members in decision-making processes.

Speaking after his declaration, he explained that he arrived at the decision after extensive consultations with political associates, youths, women groups, party stakeholders, and supporters across Bauchi South Senatorial District and Bauchi State at large, stressing that the APC developed an increasing disregard for the opinions and aspirations of grassroots supporters.

He further said that his movement to the PRP is aimed at strengthening democratic governance, protecting the interests of the common people, and providing effective and responsive representation for the citizens of Bauchi State.

Senator Umar said that the time has come for patriotic leaders to unite and rescue the country from poverty, unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship, and poor governance.

According to him; “Our people deserve better governance, better opportunities, and leadership that truly listens to their concerns. Politics should be about service to humanity, justice, development, and improving the living conditions of the masses”.

Umar assured of his commitment to championing policies and programmes that will directly impact on the lives of ordinary citizens, especially in the areas of Youth empowerment and job creation, quality education and scholarship opportunities, improved healthcare delivery, Agricultural development and food security amongst others.

The lawmaker called on his supporters, political allies, and well-wishers to join him in the PRP in order to continue the collective struggle for good governance, social justice, accountability, and sustainable development across Bauchi State.

Umar assured the people of Bauchi State that his commitment to their progress, unity, and development remains unwavering, thus promised to continue providing purposeful leadership and effective representation at all levels.
