President Buhari Sends 43 Ministerial Nominees To The Senate

After weeks of suspense and anxiety, President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial list containing 42 nominees finally got to the floor of the Senate on Tuesday.

The list, sent to the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan on Monday evening, indicated an increase of six (6) on the previous 36 ministers that served during the President’s first term in office.

In contrast with his first tenure showing when President Buhari delayed for about six (6) months before appointing ministers, the current list of nominees is coming less than two months after his May 29 second term inauguration.

Interestingly, about 12 names from the immediate past cabinet made the new Ministerial list. The returnee Ministers include former governors, Babatunde Fashola (Lagos); Dr Chris Ngige (Anambra); and Rotimi Ameachi (Rivers)

Also among new names on the list are former governors, Senator Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom); Senator George Akume (Benue State); Mr Timipre Sylva (Bayelsa state); and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (Osun state).

Others on the list include Senator Gbemi Saraki, younger sister of immediate past Senate President, and the Spokesman of Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO), Barrister Festus Keyamo (SAN).

A further perusal of the list indicate that apart from appointing one per state in accordance with constitutional provision, President Buhari also picked a nominee each from the six geo-political zones of the country.

The Senate had an emergency closed door session to consider the modus operandi that would fast track the screening and confirmation of the Ministerial nominees ahead of its two months annual vacation earlier scheduled to commence on Thursday.
