President Tinubu Sacks Prof Aisha Maikudi As VC UNIABUJA, Effect Other Changes

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sacked Professor Aisha Maikudi as Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja now known as Yakubu Gowon University.

The sack of Prof. Maikudi was part of the changes effect at several federal universities that also saw to the dissolution of the Governing Council of the University of Abuja.

Accordingly, President Tinubu has appointed Professor Lar Patricia Manko as Acting Vice Chancellor of the Yakubu Gowon University for a six-month term.

The President said that Professor Lar will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice Chancellor position when it becomes available.

These were contained in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who also said that Senator Lanre Tejuoso, who currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, will now take over as the Pro-Chancellor of the Yakubu Gowon University.

Similarly, Senator Tejuoso will be succeeded as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi by Senator Joy Emordi, who is leaving the Alvan Ikoku University of Education as Pro-Chancellor.

Similarly, President Tinubu also sacked Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu from his position as Acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), before his tenure ends on February 14.

In his place, Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam has been appointed as his successor for six months and will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position.

The statement explained that the leadership changes at UNN extend to the role of Pro-Chancellor, with General Ike Nwachukwu (rtd) reassigned to Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo while Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor of UNN. Previously, Ojo held the same position at the Federal University of Lokoja and the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti.

In the same vein, Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi, currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, has been appointed to succeed Ojo at the Federal University of Lokoja while Senator Sani Stores is the new Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, succeeding Senator Joy Emordi. Senator Stores is a Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Additionally, Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, a current Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has been appointed the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.

The statement said that all appointments and reassignment decisions are effective immediately, adding that the President emphasised that the changes reflect his administration’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability.

It further said that the restructuring aimed to strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
