Presidential Poll: Supreme Court Hears Atiku’s Appeal On Wednesday October 30, 2019.
BY VICTOR BUORO, ABUJA – Barring unforeseen circumstances, the Supreme Court of Nigeria will on Wednesday, October 30, 2019, commence hearing in the Appeal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its Presidential candidate on the February 2019 election.
This is arising from the judgment of the Appeal Court (Presidential Election Petition Tribunal), which validated the election of President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress.
The membership of the Appeal Panel of the Supreme Court has been a subject of controversy which may have been resolved by the Chief Justice of the Federation.
While members of the opposition political parties led by the Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP), insisted that the membership of the Appeal panel should follow seniority of the Justices of the Supreme Court based on tradition and precedence already set, the ruling Party and the Presidency argued that every Justice of the Supreme Court is qualified to be nominated to be on the panel.
The presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar had recently complained over the delay in constituting the Supreme Court appeal panel just as the opposition Party accused the Presidency of interfering in the choice of members of the panel in order to get ruling in favour of President Muhammadu Buhari.
