Rivers Ambush: Gunmen Kill One Soldier, Injure Two Others

BY ONYEKACHUKWU IBEZIM – Tragedy struck on Sunday morning in Rivers State as one soldier was reportedly killed while two others were seriously wounded in an attack by some unknown gunmen.

Reports indicated that the attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday at the boundary between Asari-Toru and the Emohua Local Government Areas of the state.

According to the reports, some gunmen ambushed the soldiers close to Ahiankwo market shot at them, killing and injuring the reported victims and this was confirmed by the Chairman of Akuku-Toru, Rowland Sekibo, who visited the scene of the incident.

Sekibo said though critically wounded, efforts were on to save the lives of the two soldiers, even as a source at the Military Hospital on Aba Road, Port Harcourt, hinted both were already receiving adequate medical treatment at the Emergency Unit of the hospital at press time.

However, the spokesman of the Six Division of Nigeria Army, Port Harcourt, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Ekeocha, could not react to the incident as calls and text messages to his phone were not responded to nor returned.

On her part, the Public Relations Officer of the River State Police Command, DSP Grace Iringe-Koko, said hints on the ugly incident had filtered in but efforts were on to confirm its veracity.
