The political imbroglio in Rivers State assumed a new dimension on Thursday, January 8, 2026 as members of the State House of Assembly led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Oduh.
This followed resolution arrived at during plenary session of the House that was presided over by Speaker Amaewhule.
At the plenary, the Majority Leader, Hon. Major Jack read the notice of allegations of gross misconduct levelled against Governor Fubara.
The impeachment notice was signed by 26 members of the House in which the lawmakers claimed the misconduct of the Governor was anchored on alleged violations of the Nigerian Constitution.
After the adoption of the notice, Speaker Amaewhule announced that the allegations would be formally served on Governor Fubara within the next seven days in line with legislative procedure.
In the same vein, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Linda Stewart, read a separate notice of allegations and gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor, Ngozi Oduh, thereby extended the impeachment process to her.
The development has expectedly escalated the political crisis in the State that is being piloted and anchored by the former governor of the State and present minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, but with dire consequences for governance and stability in the oil rich state.
