Rivers Assembly Requests CJ To Constitute Panel To Probe Fubara, Deputy

The political atmosphere in Rivers State experienced another heat wave on Friday, January 16, 2026 as the four members of State House of Assembly that had pulled out of the impeachment process suddenly made a detour and rejoined their colleagues to continue with the process.

This was as the Assembly called on the Chief Judge of the state to immediately set up a panel to investigate the allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.

The legislators in a unanimous vote, vowed that they would continue with the impeachment process to its logical conclusion.

Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Dumle Maol told journalists at a press conference that Governor Fubara lacked the trust needed to address the political crisis rocking the State, stressing that the duo of Fubara and Prof Odu had resorted to intimidating the legislature.

While thanking President Bola Tinubu for wading into the crisis, the Assembly members urged the Speaker to continue with the impeachment proceedings.

The four members of the Assembly namely, the Minority Leader, Sylvanus Nwankwo, representing Omuma constituency, Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency, the Deputy Minority Leader, representing Khana Constituency I, Barile Nwakoh, and Emilia Lucky-Amadi, representing Obio/Akpor constituency II had a few days ago, appealed to their colleagues to suspend the impeachment proceedings.

But, their sudden detour took members of the public by surprise as they castigated Governor Fubara and his deputy over alleged intolerance and high handedness.
