The Action Peoples Party (APP), was on Saturday, October 5, 2024 declared winner in 22 out of the 23 chairmanship positions in the just-concluded Local Government Councils election in Rivers State.
The Chief Election Officer of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli, who announced the results of the election in Port Harcourt, said the announcement for the Etche Local Government Council was suspended since the collation of results was still ongoing.
Justice Enebeli said the results for Etche LGA will be declared alongside that of the 319 councillorship seats at a later date.
Political commentators have attributed the strong showing of APP in the Councils’ polls to the Party enjoying backing of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who directed his supporters to vote for candidates contesting on that platform.
Following crisis within the Rivers chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the supremacy battle for the party’s soul between Fubara and his predecessor, who is the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, took a dramatic turn ahead of the Councils’ election as the governor directed all Caretaker Committee Chairmen to contest the polls on APP’s platform.
