In what appeared a new twist in the political crisis, the Rivers State Government on Wednesday, December 12, 2023 commenced the demolition of the State House of Assembly.
The demolition of the complex of the Rivers State House of Assembly located along Moscow Road, Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, according to the State Government is to pave way for the reconstruction of a new building.
Information pieced together by Forefront News indicated that about 10 Earth moving machines (bulldozers) and other equipment belonging to the State Government descended on the Assembly Complex as early as 5:00 am took position around the rubbles of the complex.
It was further gathered that the demolition of the State House of Assembly complex commenced at about 7:30am and was still being carried out at the time of filing this report.
The reconstruction followed the bombing of the Assembly complex in the wake of the factionalisation of the State House of Assembly between supporters of Governor Simi Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike.
The Governor Fubara-led government of Rivers State had promised to reconstruct the House of Assembly complex as a result of the burning down of the complex.
The demolition is already raising some dusts with the possibility of escalating the already tensed political atmosphere in the state with regards to the faceoff between the pro-Wike legislators and those supporting Governor Fubara.
