BY COBHAM NSA, ABUJA – The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) says its robust engagements with about 12 Nigerian universities and the media on Deposit Insurance System (DIS) is paying off handsomely in enhancing financial stability and depositors’ protection in the nation’s banking industry.

Managing Director and Chief Executive of NDIC, Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim said aside introducing DIS courses in some Nigerian Universities, the Corporation’s continuous partnership and collaboration with various stakeholders are effectively promoting financial literacy and consumers’ security within the system.

Addressing the media on activities marking its 30th anniversary celebration in Abuja, Alhaji Ibrahim said among the four themes for executing NDIC’s strategic objectives is creating the desired public awareness and sensitisation for the implementation of DIS in Nigeria

He said so far these strategic engagements, involving about 12 universities across the country, have further demonstrated NDIC’s strong resolve to maintain high level of professionalism and excellence in its operations.

The NDIC boss, represented at the briefing by Director of Communication and Public Affairs, Mr Sunday Oluyemi, listed the institutions as University of Abuja, University of Maiduguri, University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife and Bayero University, Kano (BUK).

He said others include: Abubaker Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, University of Ilorin, University of Port Harcourt, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, adding that the Corporation will continue to expand its engagement for wider coverage within the nation’s education sector.

On its media partnership, Ibrahim said as the fourth estate of the realm, NDIC values the role played by the press in the socio-economic development of the nation, adding; “That is one reason why the NDIC sponsors the annual Workshop for Financial Correspondents Association of Nigeria (FICAN) as well as the Editors’ Forum. NDIC sees media practitioners as strategic partners.”

Assuring that NDIC will not renege on its capacity building for the media as strategic partners, he said the Corporation has since year 2002 invested in the Annual Workshop for Business Editors and Members of the Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria which has become an annual event.

“In the same vein, the Annual Editors Forum was instituted to focus on Publishers and Editors of major Print and Electronic Media. I believe you all can bear testimonies to the relevance of the training programmes in the last seventeen years. Be that as it may, I want to assure you that the Corporation will not relent in supporting the Media in any capacity within its means and power”, he said

Alhaji Ibrahim, who expressed happiness that the Corporation, in 30 years of its existence, has fulfilled the public policy objectives for which it was established, said the series of structural and operational reforms have also seen NDIC aligning its activities with global best practices while having the right impetus to realize its mandate.

Activities to celebrate its achievements in the last three decades as well as honour NDIC’s founding fathers, who left a legacy of excellence in service and commitment to financial system stability, included special anniversary prayers during the Juma’at Prayers at the National Mosque in Abuja on Friday, October 18, 2019; Health and wellness Anniversary Walk by NDIC staff and Novelty Football Match between the Corporation and Debt Management Office (DMO) staff held on Saturday, October 19, 2019 and Special Anniversary Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, October 20, 2019, at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja.

Other highlights of the celebrations are: NDIC 30th Anniversary Public Lecture/Book Presentation at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja and Anniversary Dinner at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja on Monday, October 21, 2019.

Similarly, the Corporation said various commemorative activities, including visits to Orphanages, had been planned to take place simultaneously in Lagos and all NDIC Zonal Offices nationwide.
