Sallah Celebrations: Multiple Explosions Rock Borno, With 16 Killed
BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – A male suicide bomber on Sunday, being Eid Mubarak celebration day, gained entry into the premises of University of Maiduguri, and detonated Person-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (PBIED) on his body near the Rapid Response Services Office building, in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The suicide bomber died as a result of the blast while three University security personnel on duty sustained various degrees of injuries.
However, one of the injured security personnel, a female whose identity was given as Becky Edubi, later died while being attended to at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
In the same vein, at about 10;30pm same day, four female suicide bombers infiltrated Zannari community in Gwange general area of Jere LGA. Two (2) of the suicide bombers detonated PBIEDs on their bodies in two residential buildings.
The bombers died killing eight other persons while 11 others sustained injuries. Per chance, the third bomber detonated the PBIED killing himself alone. The fourth female suicide bomber, whose identity was not known but was arrested later died same night as a result of injuries she sustained.
In another development, two female suicide bombers today (Monday) at about 4:08am detonated PBIEDs on their bodies within the premises of University of Maiduguri.
One of the suicide bombers detonated the PBIED close to the Entrepreneurship and Skill Acquisition Centre Complex killing herself alone just as the second suicide bomber detonated her PBIED behind the Works Department complex also killing herself with no other casualty.
EOD/SARS and patrol teams were mobilised to the scenes. The dead and injured were evacuated to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. The EOD sanitised and rendered the various scenes and their neighbourhoods safe while normalcy has been restored.
A statement by the Commissioner of Police, Borno State command, Mr. Damian Chukwu said in all, 16 persons including the suicide bombers died in the multiple explosions while 13 persons were injured.
