Senate Confirms Justice Kekere-Ekun As Chief Justice of Nigeria
The Senate on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, confirmed the nomination and recommendation of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s confirmation took place by the committee of the Whole after her screening at Wednesday’s plenary.
Moving the motion for her confirmation, the Leader of Senate,Senator Bamidele Opeyemi said the conduct of her screening and subsequent confirmation for appointment as CJN was in accordance with section 231(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended .
Opayemi said reports before the Senate on the nominee indicated a positive clearance from the security agencies, adding that there was no petition against her nomination and or confirmation for appointment as CJN.
Accordingly, the Senate confirmed her appointment as substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria through an overwhelming voice vote after quizzing her with questions.
Shortly after her confirmation, the President of Senate, Godswill Akpabio congratulated Justice Kekere-Ekun on her appointment as the new CJN and urged her to live up to her words in the delivery of justice to Nigerians.
During the question and answers by senators, JusticeKekere-Ekun, said she had initiated several reforms as a Magistrate and Court of Appeal Justice, especially on alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
Justice Kekere-Ekun vowed that if confirmed as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, she would uphold the integrity of the judiciary, the rule of law and defend the rights of Nigerians.
