As part of determined efforts aimed at repositioning the Labour Party, former Minister of Finance, Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, was on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at a stakeholders meeting held in Umuahia, Abia State, appointed as the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party (LP).
Senator Nenadi Usman, had represented Kaduna South senatorial district at the Senate from 2011 to 2015.
Similarly, the immediate-past Senate Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Darlington Nwokocha from Abia Central was appointed to serve as the Secretary of the 29-member Caretaker committee which is expected to complete its assignment in 90 days.
The Caretaker Committee was specifically directed to rescue the party from its current leadership crisis, and organize a convention where a new leadership of the party would emerge from the Ward to the national level.
In attendance at the stakeholders meeting that was hosted by Governor Alex Otti, were the presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, his running mate, Datti Ahmed, Senator Victor Umeh, the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State, Rhodes-Vivour among others.
The Julius Abure led National Working Committee of the Labour Party is yet to respond to the resolution of the Stakeholders meeting and the setting up of the Senator Usman-led caretaker committee.
