Sexual Harassment: Why Akpoti-Uduaghan Risks Going To Jail – Lawyer
Mr Amadi Anyakweh Miracle, a legal practitioner and public affairs analyst has said that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagha risks going to jail if found guilty over a sexual allegation against Senator Godswill Akpabio in a court of law.
Anyakweh specifically said that Akpoti-Uduaghan may spend 14 years imprisonment if the Court upholds the accusation of Senator Godswill Akpabio’s against Akpoti-Uduaghan that she mocked him in a satirical apology posted recently on her social media pages.
In the lawsuit dated May 7, 2025 and filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, with case number CS/384/25, Akpabio is demanding that Akpoti-Uduaghan should delete the post from all her social media platforms.
However, Anyakweh, a Port Harcourt-based lawyer, said that the court would not be bound to rely on statements not supported by real, circumstantial, or documentary evidence.
He said; “How do we figure out the truthfulness of Senator Natasha’s allegation? The court will expect that he who alleges should prove”.
Anyakweh explained that the Evidence Act makes provisions for the rules governing all kinds of statements and evidences, adding that any statement not supported by real, circumstantial, or documentary evidence will be discountenanced and the court will not be bound to rely on it.
According to him; “The law governing evidence is clear on the fact that any statement not linked to material evidence will be treated as hearsay and such kind of evidence is not admissible under the Nigerian law.
“Anyone who alleges must prove the existence of his allegation. That is the position of our law. Failure to provide sufficient and credible evidence in court might land Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan in trouble for malicious prosecution and perjury,” he stressed.
