One of the Christian Clergymen listed among those allegedly “contracted” by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Wednesday’s official unveiling of the ruling Party’s Vice Presidential candidate in Abuja, Apostle Ekapong Ubi, has distanced himself from what he described as a deceitful political charade.

The Calabar-based preacher was reacting to the allegations surrounding the appearance of some religious leaders at the APC presidential flag bearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu official unveiling of former Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, as his running mate for the 2023 elections.

Denying being among the ‘hired Bishops and Pastors’, the Calabar-based cleric, whose name appeared as number 26 on the purported list, said in a telephone interview with the Daily Sun newspaper on Thursday that the news of his alleged participation in Abuja as one of a ‘hired religious leaders’ was quite shocking.

According to Apostle Ubi, he was at his Calabar residence when a list surfaced online purporting that he was among those hired to grace Senator Shettima’s unveiling in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“As I am talking to you now, I am at Eight Miles in Calabar, Cross River State, and have not travelled to Abuja in the last three months. Thank you so much, my brother, greetings from our ministry and my family, and greetings from Calabar. I wanted you to see me physically that I am in Calabar I never travelled anywhere.

“No call was put across to me by anybody and I’m not aware and I am not an APC member so they have decided to use that to collect money.

“The living God that I serve will judge them, I am calling on the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies to go after those fake, mischief makers so that they will be dealt with. It shows that if APC can go this way, the 2023 election is not safe for us. God bless you.

“They got my number from either my Facebook page, handbills, or posters. The news came to me as a shock I must confess, I have been in Calabar for a long time. The last time I went to Abuja was around April.

“As for the Muslim Muslim ticket which I call a “kangaroo ticket“, it is painful for a place called one Nigeria to have that kind of ticket. Nigeria does not need such combination now,” he said.

Also reacting to the development, the Chairman of Cross River State Chapter, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Dr Lawrence Ekwok, described the action of the APC as the height of deceit and desperation.

Dr Ekwok

He said; “If some persons can arrange touts and sow some gowns and give them to wear and pay them N40,000 after the event as against the N100, 000 promised each member of the coalition of bishops, that tells you those persons could do anything when they are elected.”

“One of the videos of the so-called ‘bishops’ wearing their robes in the field and sharing their money after the event is already in circulation on social media.

So, with the political activities hotting up across the country, Nigerians need to be very vigilant as we approach 2023″, Dr Ekwok posited
