…Condemns Abuja-Kaduna train attack by terrorists
The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has frowned at the exclusion of the State policing in the amendment of the 1999 Constitution by the National Assembly that was transmitted to the State Houses of Assembly.
The Conference therefore directed its Committee on Constitution Review to further liaise with the National Assembly with a view to ensuring that State Policing is reconsidered and included in the Constitution.
It said that its position is hinged on the unfortunate prevailing security challenges in the country
These were contained in a communique at the end of the quarterly meeting of the Conference which took place in Ibadan, Oyo state and signed by the Chairman of the Conference, Hon. Abubakar Y Suleiman, who is also the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly.
The communique of the Conference acknowledged the receipt of the National Assembly’s Resolution on the ongoing Review of the 1999 Constitution which was officially transmitted to the State Houses of Assembly for further legislative actions.
The Conference further condemned in strong terms, the recent deadly attack by the terrorists on the Abuja-Kaduna train on Monday, March 28, 2022.
It therefore called on the security agencies and the Federal Government to go after the terrorists as well as ensure that all kidnapped passengers are rescued unhurt.
While commiserating with the families of the victims of the dastardly act, the Conference called on the Federal Government and the security agencies to take measures to avert future occurrences.
The Conference commended and appreciated the efforts of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and the Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly Rt Hon Adebo Edward Ogundoyin for hosting the 1st quarter meeting of the Conference with the theme; “The Imperative of On-Going Alteration of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.
