Speakers Conference To Buhari: Declare Bandits As Terrorists

The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to as a matter of national importance declare banditry and kidnapping in the country as acts of terrorism.

This was as Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State called on the President to declare a state of emergency on security in the country.

This Conference which made the call while appraising the insecurity situation in Nigeria, said that State Houses of Assembly have resolved to work out legislative frameworks to complement the efforts of the Federal Government to fight insecurity in the country.

In a communique issued at the end of its 3rd quarter meeting which held on Saturday at the Katsina State Government House, the Speakers specifically decried the deteriorating state of security in the country.

The Communique which was read by the Chairman of the Conference, who is also the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Hon. Abubakar Suleiman particularly called on the Federal Government to declare banditry and kidnapping as acts of terrorism and should deal with the perpetrators decisively.

The communique further states; “The Conference resolved to make appropriate laws to address fundamental issues that breed insecurity in the land as well as creating employment for the youth with a view to curbing the menace of insecurity in the country.”

Earlier, Governor Bello Masari in a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the Speakers’ Conference, said the declaration of state of emergency on security would go a long way in restoring peace and order in the country as well as guarantee protection of the lives and properties of the citizens.

Masari said that the Katsina State Government with the cooperation of the State Assembly, has provided a legal framework and restructured existing ones, among other measures with a view to curb insecurity in the state.
