State Creation Will Breed More Corruption Units – Kukah Warns

BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – The Bishop of Sokoto Archdiocese of Catholic Church, Mathew Hassan Kukah has warned that Nigeria will breed and promote corruption extensively with the creation of more states in the country.

According to him, given the situation of things today, peripheral corruption units will ultimately spring up as soon as new states come on board with the agitators seeing such as their fiefdoms to rule over.

Similarly, Bishop Kukah pointed out that all the public-funded Federal universities have suddenly been turned into ethnic conclaves with the politics of Vice chancellorship appointment gradually becoming an ethnic-oriented exercise rather than meritorious.

The highly respected Clergyman, who delivered the keynote speech at the University of Calabar (UNICAL)’s 36th Convocation Lecture, further said the argument that State creation would facilitate development is ridiculously implausible because most leaders cannot be transformational or selfless in their thinking or actions.

Bishop Kukah said only deep retrospection, reorientation, and commitment to nationalistic values by citizens can effectively put Nigeria back on the much-needed path of socio-economic growth and progress going forward.

He said there is no denying the fact that Nigeria has continued to remain a work in progress, but lamented that successive leaders at all levels have found it extremely difficult to draw a line between national cohesion and ethnic preferences.

Bishop Kukah, who spoke on the theme; “Harmonizing Diversity for National Development”, however, urged the youths not to lose hope in the project called Nigeria, but to remain resolute and committed to the ideals that would ultimately birth a new and progressive nation of their choice.

For the inspirational cleric, managing Nigeria’s diversity requires a leader who would harmonize our diversity into a cohesive and ingenious national interest devoid of any element of discrimination, or ethnic and religious bigotry.
