BY SEGUN ADEBAYO, ABUJA – The Sokoto State governor and Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDP-GF), Aminu Tambuwal says there is no reason not to accept that restructuring presents Nigeria’s best option of surviving as a nation going forward.

He also believes that besides restructuring to survive, Nigeria must necessarily adopt technology and other innovative ideas in tackling insecurity, unemployment, youth restiveness, and the numerous challenges confronting it.

Addressing a two-day PDP National Retreat with the theme: “It’s time to rescue Nigeria”, in Abuja on Tuesday, Governor Tambuwal said; “Nigeria must restructure its polity, economy, security, and ways of doing things. It must embrace relative autonomy and decentralisation of power. This will unleash the energies of our people, especially, the young. It is time to allow Nigeria to blossom. It is doable with all hands on deck.

“Secondly, we must embrace innovation and technology as a way of life. Technology will solve the youth unemployment time bomb. Technology will improve our agriculture, health, industrialisation, education, and indeed, it has implications and impacts on all facets of our lives.”

According to him; “It is in this respect that we continue to condemn the Twitter ban as a retrogressive action that should never have happened.”

The Sokoto State Chief Executive, who maintained that PDP can not afford to fail Nigerians, described the party as the only viable and credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), adding; “We must keep hope alive. We can do it. Yes, we can, as Obama would say.”

He said if the country’s main opposition party is poised to re-write a new positive chapter for Nigeria then the revitalized PDP must be true and faithfully live out words of the national anthem that say; “To build a nation where peace and justice shall reign.”

Describing Nigeria’s problems as man-made, the PDP-GF Chairman said resolving them requires a “focused, determined, knowledgeable and patriotic organisation of like minds” to create and invigorate the critical mass required for a great leap forward.

In listing Nigeria’s existing and emerging challenges to include unemployment, insecurity, corruption, nepotism, ethnic and religious bigotry low education, inflation, weak Naira, Governor Tambuwal said having learnt its lessons the hard way, PDP is fully ready to take over power come 2023 to offer Nigerians hope of a better future.

The former Speaker, House of Representatives, who referred to APC as a ‘rickety vehicle’ that cannot take Nigeria to its destination as a nation with ‘possibilities for greatness and progress’, said; “PDP is now once again a well-oiled, serviced vehicle that will midwife the Nigeria of our dreams.

“It is indeed time to Rescue and Rebuild Nigeria. Yes, it requires leadership, with vision and discipline.”

Also, in a presentation titled; “An Overview of the PDP”, former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana urged PDP leaders to work together as a team being dedicated to good governance, respecting each other, and showing a willingness to selflessly serve the people.

While admitting that it is a very tough process to translate visions into reality, Prof Gana said leaders must have a clear sense of priorities, adding; “Indeed, effective leadership has a lot to do with the wisdom of selecting a set of priorities.

“You cannot do everything at once. You must therefore seek the wisdom to decide the order of priorities. Wisdom is, therefore, a great asset for good leaders.”

The well-attended programme was graced by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Governors Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta and Godwin Obaseki of Edo; former Cross River governor, Liyel Imoke and Chairman, PDP Disciplinary Committee, Chief Tom Ikimi among others.
