Terrorists operating with Niger State have bombed a bridge linking Wawa and Luma communities in Borgu Local Government Area of the State.
The explosion which took place in the early hours of Monday, March 23, 2026, reportedly killed eight persons and was believed to have been caused by explosives planted by suspected terrorists.
The explosion caused serious damage to the bridge considered very critical as it linked Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities which is an important route for residents and traders, especially those heading to the Babana border market, that holds every Monday.
It was gathered that the victims were travelling in a vehicle from Nuku and Woro when it ran over the IED that triggered into a deadly explosion that killed all seven passengers and the driver of the vehicle.
The deadly explosion is believed to be a new approach by the terrorists which also targeted a bridge to disrupt movement within the area, particularly those of troops that may go after them.
Speaking on the development, SP Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson of the Police command in Niger State, confirmed the incident, saying that the attackers believed to be operating from the Kainji National Park, used an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) to destroy the bridge.
SP Abiodun said; “On 23rd March 2026 at about 6:30 a.m., a report was received indicating that earlier, at about 2:00 a.m. the same day, suspected terrorists from the Park forest used an explosive device to bomb a bridge along Luma Road in Borgu LGA, connecting Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities.
“The bridge was damaged in what appears to be an attempt to undermine security operations in the area. Monitoring continues, while clearance operations have been intensified,” he said.
In a related development, explosions were also reported to have gone off between Rafingiwa and Babana, as well as Woro and Kaiama, forcing residents to flee the area.
