The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, has castigated the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration of sheltering more corrupt officials, whom he described as “Yahoo people”.

He said the time has come for the youth to challenge the status quo to guide and guard the next generation by ensuring a focussed call to action for leadership driven by character, innovation, and commitment to change.

Obi, who stated these in his keynote address as a Guest Speaker at the 4th Graduation ceremony of Nexford University, expressed serious concern over the state of the nation, stressing that it has become a breeding ground for both internal and external looters.

Speaking on the theme; “Lead the Change; Ignite Your Future,” the former Governor of Anambra State, said that the political class has turned the country into a crime scene, where those inside and outside government are stealing.

In the words of Obi; “When we talk about vices, don’t think it is just the Yahoo boys. There are actually more Yahoo people in government than outside it. We’ve turned this country into a crime scene, where both those inside and outside government are stealing.

“Leadership is about igniting the future. It is not rocket science, but it requires strong character and the ability to resist doing the wrong thing,” he stressed.

While appraising the event which focused on the significance of leadership and youth empowerment in shaping a better future, Mr Obi emphasised the pressing need for effective leadership to guide Nigeria toward meaningful development, thus urged the graduands to be catalysts for positive change in their communities.

To the students, Obi said; “You have gained knowledge today. Use it to drive societal change. Your education equips you to help create a better environment in the society where you want to live.”

Taking a critical look at the challenges facing young Nigerians, Obi noted that they youths are victims of Nigeria’s systemic failure as a result of the failure of the past generation to do what was right.

According to him; “Our generation and those before us have refused to do what is right. As a result, you are bearing the consequences.”

Obi noted the pivotal role of young people in the Nigeria’s transformation and urged them to leverage their education and skills to lead with integrity in order to build a nation rooted in accountability and progress.
