Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), of neglecting Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic crises in favour of early political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Malami, who spoke at the Second Expanded Meeting of the National Political Consultative Group (North), which held in Abuja on Sunday, May 25, 2025, expressed serious concerns and dismay at the APC’s recent summit, where leaders of the party formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term.

The APC chieftain noted that the endorsement of Tinubu for a second term took place despite widespread public dissatisfaction with solid two years still remaining of the first term.

Malami specifically criticised the endorsement which he described as “insensitive and totally misplaced”, stressing that the focus of a serious government should be on solving urgent issues such as insecurity, economic collapse, and deepening poverty, particularly in the northern region.

In the words of Malami; “Just a few days ago, the ruling party held its national summit. Instead of confronting serious problems such as banditry, inflation, and food insecurity, it chose to endorse President Tinubu for a second term. This is a distraction from the real priorities”.

The former Attorney General also condemned some of the policies of the Tinubu-led administration, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, which he noted was implemented without planning, thereby led to skyrocketed transportation and commodity prices.

Malami, equally cited border mismanagement as another policy failure that has crippled agricultural productivity in the north, stressing that leadership must return to being service-oriented, grounded in equity, justice, and responsiveness to the needs of the people as against personal ambition or political opportunism.
